Standards-Based Grading

Standards

Each subject has learning targets to be achieved within a specific period, which are broken down and organized using a proficiency scale. These targets are:
-
Specific and measurable
-
Written in student-friendly language
Activities
In every subject, each standard features projects, assignments, presentations, exercises and tasks mapped directly to the proficiency scale. When completing these activities, students receive clear instructions that specify exactly which standard and proficiency level the task targets.

Portfolio

Grading

Individual meeting

An individual meeting is not a setting for the teacher to quiz a student and assign a grade, rather,it is a meeting where the student and teacher discuss progress based on evidence collected in their portfolio. For each subject, the 15-minute meeting provides an opportunity where:
-
The student evaluates their own progress in relation to the learning targets.
-
The teacher provides specific feedback and guidance on next steps for future improvement.
School society in Grading
Student
Students are actively involved in every stage of the assessment process, which strengthens their self-management skills, shows greater ownership of their learning, and develops their metacognitive abilities.
Clearly sees connection between grades and learning targets , reflects on progress, A detailed and specified proficiency scale minimizes any perception of unfairness.
Teacher
Gains a clearer understanding of each student’s unique needs during meetings, thus ensuring feedback is targeted and actionable.
Operates within a system that significantly minimizes the risk of student behaviour influencing academic grades.
Promotes and implements individualized teaching principles and approaches across the entire school.
Parent
Gains a clear understanding of exactly what the student is working on within each subject framework.
Receives precise information regarding what the student has mastered and exactly where they require additional support.
Implementing SBG
Challenge #1
To address this
It can initially be challenging for students to fully grasp the meaning of specific learning targets.
Educators must work with students with both the targets and the proficiency scales. This involves consistently revisiting, reinforcing and integrating them into daily lessons and learning activities.
Challenge #2
To address this
Since only the final assessments determine the final grade, some students might only put effort at the very end of the term.
We help students realise that it is important to allocate enough time for growth and improvement. We balance the workload by setting goals and placing an emphasis on making consistent effort over time.
Challenge #3
To address this
Since the same assessment criteria apply to everyone, some students may feel “set up to fail” with low grades, which can negatively affect their motivation.
